3D Television, The Industry Saviour?

Will 3DTVs make up for the overall fall in TV sales in 2009? 3D TVs are definitely expected to boost the TV market. Since 3D TV will be at the top of the line this year, it will surely help by slowing down the price erosion the industry suffered last year. 2010 marks the beginning of 3D in-home viewing on television screens and, so it is too early to assess the market size for this new category.

Sony is very confident about the TV industry for 2010. With a strong focus on 3D, the company is expected to grab 30 % of the total market share. Sony expects 3D TVs will make up approximately 5 to 10 % of sales of all Sony LCD TV sets during 2010. But this is difficult to predict at this moment as 3D TVs are not yet introduced in most markets.

Sony will launch an entire range of 3D compatible Bravia LCD TVs with screen sizes ranging from 40 to 60 inches. In addition to LCD TVs, Sony will also be launching 3D-enabled Blu-ray disc players and 3D-enabled home theatre systems and along with a firmware upgrade for the PlayStation 3 that will make the console 3D-enabled.

LG will be introducing 47 inch and 55 inch 3D TV sets initially and then will come up with more advanced range of 3D TVs in the second half of 2010. LG 3D will be called 3D Full LED TV, which differentiates it than other brands in terms of image quality. Samsung will offer the largest range of 3D products in the market consisting of LED, LCD and plasma televisions. Samsung is expected to launch around a dozen models in 2010.
