3D TV Price Revealed

The phenomenal success of the recent 3D movie Avatar and the recent buzz about 3D TV technology is signaling major financial prospects for the television manufacturers. But the heavy price tag may spoil the success story.

Cost of a new 3D TV

Samsung has achieved victory in the pursuit of being the first company to mass manufacture consumer marketable 3D TV sets. Willing to capture the 3D TV market, Panasonic also announced the launch of its first 3D TV the very next day, which is sold exclusively through Best Buy. Sony is expected to launch its first 3D TV sometime in summer 2010.

Although the 3D technology is very hip and  trendy, it comes with a heavy price tag. Samsung’s package for a 46 inch TV and the required Blu-ray player plus a couple sets of 3D glasses costs about $3,000. Panasonic’s comparable system with a 50 inch TV costs about $2,900.

Pricing will be a huge problem for the success of 3D TV as HDTV sets of about same size are priced below $ 1000 now. Of course, 3D on TV technology comes in a package with some nice extras. A high end Blu Ray player costs about $ 300 and 2 pairs of 3D viewing glasses are at $150 each.

Still, the combination of an HDTV and Blu Ray player is around $1400 or less, which makes it affordable for the average consumers. Although the 3D technology is outstanding, the heavy price tag will have to be worked on if the manufacturers want the world to embrace 3D TV.
