Youth and 3D Technology
The young generation watches an average of 3.5 hours of TV online per week, as compared to an average of 5 hours normal television and around 20 hours of online activities. This increasingly multilayered media consumption has the TV industry concerned and so it is suggested that 3DTV is an effort to increase the usage of TV.
Despite the 3D film Avatar being the biggest grossing film in history, 3D TV seems more an extension of High-Definition TV and possibly a step towards returning the focus of the youngsters to TV. On the contrary the youngsters watch programs on the internet simultaneously while working on other activities like homework, music, research and instant messaging on computers. In this scenario 3D TV does not attribute to bigger possibilities for the next evolution in entertainment.
It looks like youngsters will continue to use the internet and their computers to watch films until there are cheap, accessible and truly immersive alternatives available. 3D TV won’t become fully mainstream until the consumer electronic industry recognize exactly what people want out of their products. The existing technology of 3D TVs on display at CES appear like a stepping-stone to the fully immersive experience of the near future. Intel’s Wireless Display (WiDi) is a new technology that allows the laptop to wirelessly connect to HDTV, allowing the fully on-demand quality of internet streaming to appear on the television set.
PC Gamers have adopted graphics chip maker NVIDIA’s 3D Vision Bundle, $600, for effective 3D with the included special 22-inch Samsung Syncmaster 2233RZ LCD Monitor and NVIDIA 3D Vision Stereoscopic glasses. The system also requires a minimum $250 NVIDIA graphics card for the PC, overall an expensive bargain, but it effectively converts more than 400 games into sharp 3D. As compared to this the consumers can also pay a huge chunk of money for 3D TV, which also shows normal viewing. Some companies are starting to invest in non-glasses based 3DTV to meet the demands of the gaming technology. But still the 3D technology is yet to materialize as the viewers wish to see it. Lot of research has been done and theories are established, and the outcome is in pipeline.
